Abstract : The rapid increase in prevalence of obesity across the globe gives obesity the status of epidemic.. Obesity is paticularly associated with an increased risk of developing Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) or Type 2 diabetes. The link between type 2 diabtes and obesity has been well documented, and reiterate that diet in conjuction with medical intervention is essential for diabetes. To determine the prevalence of obesity in the diabetic population, the study was undertaken in three diabetic outpatient clinics belonging to both genders aged between 30 and 80 years for whom socioeconomic background, anthropometric measurements were captured through interview schedule. The details of food intake were assessed through food frequency questionnaire and 24 hour recall method. Around one third of the sample were of middle age category where overweight prevalence indicated through higher body mass index was around 44 per cent and more than 90 per cent had greater waist-to hip (above 8) ratio. Majority were lactovegetarians, whose food pattern revealed more carbohydrate consumption and were nutritionally inadequate to bring down blood sugars and weight loss. The need for nutrition education aiming for targeted weight loss and concept of balanced nutrition intake is emphasized.
