By : V.S. Mynavathi , C. Jayanthi
Abstract : Small ruminants are primarily maintained on natural pasturelands with insitu grazing and the productivity is constrained by the low quality of native grasses. Silvipasture is another traditional land use system used for grazing livestock in Western Zone of Tamil Nadu. The development of sulitable silvipastoral system is extremely relevant. The best performing system identified were Acacia leucophloea + Cenchrus setigerus + Stylosanthes hamata & fodder sorghum + Pillipesara. During 2009-10, the total live weight of six sheep increased from 126.0 kg to 159.5 kg in location I, 108.0 kg to 137.6 kg in location II and 114.0 kg to 145.6 kg in location III. The average daily gain in live weight per sheep was 16.9 g, 15.0 g and 16.0 g in location I, II and III, respectively.
