Noorjahan | Abstract : Seaweeds constitute commercially important marine renewable resources which provides valuable ideas for the development of new drugs against cancer, microbial infection, inflammation . The aim of present study was to screen for the phytochemical constituents, to quantify the total phenolic content from the commonly occurring red seaweed Gracilaria corticata and Kappaphycus alvarezii. Three different solvents namely ethanol, hexane and ethyl acetate were used for extraction. The phytochemical analysis showed the
presence of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, proteins, steroids, flavonoids, quinones and terpenoids in different solvents extracts of algae. The total phenolic content was observed to be highest in ethyl acetate of Gracilaria corticata, ethanolic extract of both Kappaphycus alvarezii and Gracilaria corticata. The hexane extract of Kappaphycus alvarezii also showed significant amounts of total phenolic content. The presence or absence of phytochemical constituents depends upon the solvent medium used for extraction and the physiological property of the seaweeds. From the results of the present study, it is concluded that the seaweeds may be used as a fresh source of bioactive compounds with immense medicinal potential. | | | Author Profile | Full-Text PDF |View Video | |
